The Big 3-0!

So, it's been a week, and I'm just getting around to posting about it! It's true, I turned 30 last week and celebrated all weekend! :-)

Here's the run-down of the weekend.

We (the 4 of us) drove up to Greensboro Wednesday (the 18th--my birthday). *I* thought the plan was that Matt and I would drop the girls off at his parent's and the two of us would go out to dinner together. We left to go to dinner as planned, but we didn't go where I thought we were going. We went instead to the restaurant *I* thought we were going to go to on Friday night with the whole family. Surprise! Matt had arranged with everyone to meet there on Wednesday instead. So, dinner at P.F. Chang's on Wednesday night with Matt's parents, my dad and step-mom, my grandmother, my brother, Matt's aunt, and our girls. (Matt's parents left their house with the girls just after we left.) Dinner was fantastic and we learned that our girls happen to love lettuce wraps! They used chop-sticks too and thought that was really cool! Ainsley got the hang of it pretty quickly. Cadence needed a little help, but she still enjoyed her food! Of course, there was cake too. I needed a little help blowing out the candles, and Ainsley was an eager little candle blower outer! ;-)

Thursday, Matt and I spent the day at the Greensboro Coliseum watching the first round of the NCAA Men's basketball tournament. Matt bought tickets as part of my birthday gift. We'd been to this before in college and had a great time, so since the Tarheels were going to be there, we knew we were in for a treat! The girls spent the day with Matt's mom. They met up with us between sessions of the games for dinner then we headed back to the coliseum and they headed back to get the girls in bed for the night. Matt and I got back to their house around midnight to a quiet sleeping house!

Friday, I took the girls to the Natural Science Center to wander around the zoo and hang out with my dad. He's worked there 30+ years and I spent my high school and college years working there as well. Ainsley and Cadence love visiting there, so I take them when I can. :-) Here they are with the gibbons.

Friday afternoon I headed out for some birthday pampering courtesy of Matt's mom. I got a mani/pedi and enjoyed a glass of wine while I was at it!

Saturday, the girls and I spent some time with my mom and brother. We hung out at their house for a bit then went out to lunch. Late Saturday afternoon, Matt and I headed back to the colliseum for the second round of games while the girls hung out with Nana, Pap-paw and Aunt Sara again. They must have had a fun time because they were all asleep again when we got home!

Sunday, we drove back home to Charlotte to prepare for the week ahead. I had a wonderful birthday weekend. Oh, yeah, the Tarheels won while we were there. Let's hope that trend continues and they get the big win on April 6th!

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

So, here's a little conversation that Ainsley and I had when she got in the car after preschool this afternoon. :-)

Ainsley: "Mommy! I saw a leprechaun today!"
Me: "Really? Wow!"
A: "Well, I really didn't see it. But, I know it was in our class today."
M: "How do you know that?"
A: "Well, when we got back to our classroom after lunch, all of our chairs were turned over. There were foot prints on the floor and the counters too. He made a big mess!"
M: "It sure does sound like he made a mess!"
A: "He even moved all of our gumballs." (That's their behavior chart.)
M: "That wasn't very nice of him." (Laughing at this point.)
A: "And, Mommy! He must have had to go potty too."
M: "How do you know that?"
A: "Because there was green pee in the toilet and he didn't flush it! He was a very naughty little leprechaun."

I couldn't help but laugh and agree with her. Yes, that little leprechaun sure was naughty!

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Our Visit to Levine Children's Hospital

In my last post, I mentioned that Cadence has been sick. Her illness took a bit of a turn that resulted in us staying over night at Levine Children's Hospital here in Charlotte. I realize that many of you have heard the story from other people or from us in bits and pieces, so I thought it would be best if I told the whole story from the beginning. :)

(Bear with me as I've told this story to several doctors and nurses over the last few days! It's becoming quite repetitive!)

Cadence woke up Friday night/Saturday morning vomiting. The vomiting continued all day on Saturday. She wasn't able to keep anything down. Saturday afternoon, she also started having some diarrhea. By Sunday, the vomiting had stopped, but the diarrhea continued. She still wasn't really keeping anything in her system. Of course, she wasn't really interested in taking anything in, either. We tried and tried, with not a lot of success. Saturday and Sunday Cadence ran a fever pretty much continuously even with Motrin. By Sunday evening, she was so lethargic that Matt and I began to worry that she was getting too dehydrated. We took her to the Children's ER (same hospital mentioned above). There, she was able to hold some water and part of a Popsicle in, so they sent us home. Monday morning, Cadence was vomiting again, still not interested in eating or drinking, and still having some bouts with diarrhea although not as much as the weekend. We put in a call to our regular pediatrician, just to inform them of the situation. Monday afternoon, we thought things were beginning to look up as Cadence had started to show some interest in food and drink again and the only vomit was the one from that morning. She hadn't had a fever since Sunday evening either, so that was good. Tuesday rolled around and I subbed at preschool that morning. She spent most of the morning napping while Matt worked at home. I was able to convince her to eat a little bit of lunch, then she went back to sleep for a good part of the afternoon. No more vomiting, but she was still having some of the diarrhea she had had before. For dinner, she decided she wanted some pancakes (of all things) and she did eat half of one. She went right to bed after dinner. Matt and I decided to call our pediatrician on Wednesday morning to give them another update. Wednesday morning, I was called to sub again so Matt worked at home again. He was able to get her an appointment in the morning so he took her to the doctor. Our ped informed him that she was definitely dehydrated and wanted him to take her back to the ER to start an IV. He called ahead so the wait wouldn't be as long. Matt called me at preschool and I met him at the ER. A friend took Ainsley home from preschool so she was taken care of. (Thanks, Kim!) We were informed at the ER that they wanted to admit her for the night. The IV was started in the ER and we were transferred upstairs to the hospital floor.

We wanted Ainsley's routine to stay as close to normal as possible so Matt went to pick her up to take her to her swimming lessons. After her swim class, they picked up some dinner for us and headed up to the hospital so that Ainsley could visit with Cadence for a bit. Matt returned home with Ainsley for the night and I stayed with Cadence at the hospital.

Our night at the hospital was, well, a night spent at the hospital. We were up several times for various reasons--potty, snack, drink, vital signs, noise from helicopters landing, fixing the IV line, etc.

Matt returned to the hospital after he dropped Ainsley off at preschool this morning. Cadence was SO happy to see him! She got out of bed and played with him on the couch in our room for a while. She had eaten a decent (not great) breakfast and had some juice so her energy level was definitely picking up. After she had used up all of her energy, she took a nice long nap. We had a couple of visitors during her nap so we'll have to tell her about how she slept through her hospital visitors when she's older. ;-) When she woke up, she had some cheese pizza and more juice for lunch. I think it was that last nap and lunch that really did the trick! Earlier when our nurse had been in, she didn't think we'd be going home today. (They like to see the kiddos up and moving pretty well before sending them home.) By the time the hospital pediatrician came to see her, Cadence was all over the place. Matt and I had to watch her IV lines closely so that she didn't accidentally pull it right out. She was talking and playing as if she'd never been sick. It really was an amazing turn around. The doctor asked us if we'd like to go home as he saw no reason for her to stay another night. Of course, we were thrilled! The discharge process didn't take near as long as we thought it would, so I was back home with Cadence around 4:30 this afternoon. Matt and Ainsley (who he had to pick up from our friend Kim's--she'd gone there again after school today) followed and our family was back together at home again!

Cadence's diagnosis was rotavirus--a virus that's pretty common in young children. Now we're hoping that no one else in the house is infected!

What a difference a week makes!

Last Monday, this was the scene in our neighborhood:

Temperatures in the 30's, snow on the ground, snowmen being built. It was a winter wonderland!

Today, just one week later, temps were in the 80's. Yes, you read that correctly, in the eighties. 8-0. 80. Short sleeves, shorts, sunscreen necessary. The weather was more like mid May than mid March. The weekend was just as beautiful, too. It was a perfect weekend to spend outside in the yard.

Ainsley and Daddy did just that--spent lots of time outside. They fertilized the yard, helped our neighbor with her flower bed, and just played. Both of them even got quite a bit of sun!

Unfortunately, Cadence and I didn't get to enjoy the weather as much. Cadence came down with a stomach virus Friday night/Saturday morning, so she spent most of the weekend laying on the couch or on the little aerobed watching TV. She took several catnaps throughout the weekend as well. Last night, (Sunday) Matt and I were getting concerned that Cadence was becoming dehydrated. Her tummy was (and still is at this moment) very out of sorts and she wasn't taking in much liquid. To be safe, we made a trip uptown to the children's ER so they could have a look at her. A neighborhood friend (thanks, Marla!) came over to sit with Ainsley so that Matt and I could both be with Cadence. The ER doctor did confirm that she was dehydrated, but we were able to convince her to drink some water and keep that in her so no IV was needed. We got home around 2:30 this morning. Today has been more of the same--tummy issues. :-( We have noticed today that she's beginning to show signs of perking up. She's talking and starting to get some "Cadence spunk" back. We're happy to see that!

This is a picture from how she spent the majority of yesterday:

Snow Day Fun

Finally, after 3 straight days of rain, IT SNOWED!!!!

The rain started Friday morning. Except for a few breaks in the rain, it lasted until Sunday evening around 6:00. That's when the fun began. Snow was in the forecast and Matt and I had told the girls that snow was on it's way. We knew it was going to switch over to snow around dinner time, but explaining that to two eager little girls wasn't easy. They were asking us all day about the snow. I mean, ALL DAY! I think it's safe to say that all four of us were thrilled when the snow finally started falling.

The first few minutes of the snow were tiny fine little flakes but they quickly changed into the big, fat, fluffy ones. By the time we had finished dinner, there was already a covering on the ground so we headed out to play for a few minutes before bath and bedtime. Ainsley went to bed with her blinds open watching the snow continue to fall. She was amazed at how beautiful it was!

Monday morning, we headed out to play in the 4 inches that had fallen overnight. Some of our neighbors were out playing too, so we all went for a walk along the neighborhood nature trail. We found a good hill along the trail for sledding. Ainsley and Cadence both had a blast going down it. (Our last sledding experience was on ice in the mountains. This snow was totally different!) I'm not sure if they had more fun going down the hill or "crashing" at the bottom. :-)

Of course, we also built a snowman. (Well, Daddy and Ainsley built it. Cadence wanted hot chocolate, so she and I headed in to warm up!) Here's the finished product.

Now that the snow has almost all melted, I think it's safe to say that we are all ready for Spring. Bring on the warm weather!!!
